Kara and Kurtis, A Northern Wedding

The beautiful Hay River, Northwest Territories wedding of Kara and Kurtis.

I lived and worked in the Northwest Territories for over a decade. “The north” is a place very special to me, so when I had an inquiry about shooting a summer wedding in the beautiful community of Hay River, I jumped at the chance.

The month leading up to the wedding was a little nerve-wracking. As in many areas of the country, Hay River had been threatened by wildfires periodically through the summer, and my bride and groom had a heck of a time trying to plan around this threat. At one point, they decided to move the entire wedding to British Columbia, later changing their mind again and “going for it:”.

The day….the day was perfect. Perfect temperature. They really couldn’t have asked for better conditions, to be honest. The day was electric, and fun, and I had the fortune of photographing two of the most chill humans I’ve yet encountered during this wedding journey. That week, they had a perfect window. No smoke, no nearby fires. Just beauty that matched the beauty of the day.

Maybe it was all meant to happen. A few days later, all hell broke loose, and the couple and the entire town were evacuated to Alberta as devastating fires encroached on the town (and much of the Northwest Territories).

Here’s some memories of less frightening times. The wedding story of Kurtis and Kara.
